چکیده

Two paradigms of procedural learning, serial reaction time and tracking tasks, were given to a patient with damage to the supplementary motor area (SMA) of the left mesiofrontal cortex. This patient exhibited impaired procedural learning during the serial reaction time test and mirror reversed tracking. Unreversed tracking performance was normal. Therefore the SMA-as well as the cerebellum and the striatum-participate in the development of skills requiring internal elaboration ofmotor behaviour. (7 Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 1996;60:94-97)

The role of pre-SMA for time-critical speech perception - A transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) study

The pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) is engaged in speech comprehension under difficult circumstances such as poor acoustic signal quality, cognitive load, or time-critical conditions. Previous studies found left pre-SMA activated when subjects listen to accelerated speech. Here we tested the functional role of the pre-SMA for accelerated speech comprehension by inducing a transient “virt...

Time-specific contribution of the supplementary motor area to intermanual transfer of procedural knowledge.

The supplementary motor area (SMA) makes a crucial contribution to intermanual transfer: the ability to use one hand to perform a skill practiced and learned with the other hand. However, the timing of this contribution relative to movement remains unknown. Here, 33 healthy volunteers performed a 12 item sequence in the serial reaction time task. During training, each participant responded to a...

Network Modeling for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Signals during Ultra-Fast Speech Comprehension in Late-Blind Listeners

In many functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies blind humans were found to show cross-modal reorganization engaging the visual system in non-visual tasks. For example, blind people can manage to understand (synthetic) spoken language at very high speaking rates up to ca. 20 syllables/s (syl/s). FMRI data showed that hemodynamic activation within right-hemispheric primary visual cor...
